Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
Delta Star Radio of Florida, Inc. was founded on April 25, 2001, and our Internet station began operation on July 9, 2001. The Internet-only operation ran from 2001 to 2015, and ceased with the closing of streaming provider Live365. The station was granted the call sign WDXD-LP and received its license to broadcast full time on June 29, 2015. WDXD is now on the air at 101.9 in Tallahassee.
What is your primary product or service?
Local radio - first and foremost!
I have been working extremely hard on the development of the current format, and believe it is some of the best programming I have ever done in all my years of radio. This format is now heard locally in Tallahassee on WDXD 101.9.
WDXD offers a totally local country and classic country hybrid format. On Sundays we offer a blend of classic contemporary and Southern Gospel music, along with some programming from local and area pastors, and others.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
I became interested in radio around the age of 12 and wanted to become a disc jockey more than anything else. I began my radio career in 1979 at WTAL-AM 1450 in Tallahassee. After WTAL, I worked at Florida State University as a media writer, and then spent 13 years in Christian radio at WCVC-AM 1330. After my last radio gig ended in 2004, I felt "professionally lost." Nothing else seems to satisfy me like radio does. So, here I am - owning and operating WDXD.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
There are many internet and broadcast stations. I want WDXD to be more than a computer sitting in the back running a looped playlist. We want to be involved in our local community.
Our present format has been developed because the majority of the songs on our active playlists are not available locally via terrestrial radio.
WDXD 101.9 has a Facebook page for connecting with listeners and providing local links and resources.
We also consider ourselves to be a Christian-owned company, and offer some Christian programming.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We have only one location, located just outside of Tallahassee. We recently purchased a building (an office trailer)and moved the studios into this space.
Hopefully, the FCC will grant us a power increase in the future so we can have better coverage on the north and west sides of Tallahassee. We cover east and south pretty well, reaching portions of both Jefferson and Wakulla counties.
Provide detailed directions to your location
We are located on Doll Place, near the intersection of Apalachee Parkway and Conner Blvd.
Most of our business can be conducted via phone, email, and snail mail.
What type of payments do you accept?
Cash, checks, certified checks and PayPal.
Because we are non-commercial, I am not looking for "advertisers." I am looking for individuals, business owners, churches, and others who support locally owned and operated radio. We offer a primary classic country format. On Sundays we offer classic contemporary music and southern country gospel Music.
Which areas do you service?
WDXD targets the Tallahassee area.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
Alan McCall (that's me), is the station manager and handles almost all aspects of the station's operations. The company is owned in total by my parents, my wife, and myself. I'm the only one who works at radio full time, however. Our company is Delta Star Radio of Florida, Inc., a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.
What are your hours of operation?
WDXD broadcasts 24 hours a day.
Alan is available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern time for phone calls and other radio business related communication.
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
"I really enjoy your station. Thank you for doing it."
"I didn't believe I would ever hear that song again. Thank you for finding it, and playing it."
"The station is awesome. I'm glad someone is preserving the old music."
What is your favorite quote or Bible verse?
For God so loved the world, that He gave His only-begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him, shall not perish, but have everlasting life. - John 3:16.
